ALTA (American Land Title Association) and the ACSM (American Congress of Surveying and Mapping) worked together to develop the standards for ALTA/ACSM surveys. It is mainly used for developed commercial property, and required by buyers and lenders concerned about the location of buildings, parking areas and other improvements.
Technically, an ALTA / ACSM Survey is a combination of a boundary and a topographic surveys into a map showing the relationship between the boundary and the improvements on the property.
ALTA / ACSM surveys are requested by developers, for commercial construction projects, lending and insurance purposes.
